Detection vs. Protection What Are The Differences And How Do The Differences Affect The Security Of Your Business? First, one must be able to recognize the difference between the two as defined. Below are the definitions of both as defined in a dictionary.
Detection: 1) the perception that something has occurred or some state exists. [syn: sensing] 2) the act of detecting something; catching sight of something. [syn: spotting] 3) the detection that a signal is being received. Protection: 1) the activity of protecting someone or something. 2) a covering that is intended to protect from damage or injury. 3) a shielding from harm or death.
When we speak of detection, we speak of the electronic measures set in place to monitor the status of your employees and/or your assets (i.e. alarms, closed-circuit television, access control, etc.). Many people think of these things as “protection” when in fact they are more like a means to speed up the response to whatever incidents might occur. This is what is known as detection security. Put simply, these are means of security that detect a possible break-in, or a fire, or even a perpetrator attempting to inflict personal injury or death upon someone in your building or home. It is a good thing to have these types of systems in place for these reasons. However, they aren’t fail-safe and they do have flaws. If someone were so intuitive to have a working knowledge of your detection system, they may be able to easily disable it and enter your place of business. Needless to say, you’ll be in for a definite shock! We at RM Security Consulting strongly caution against putting all of your confidence in detection systems to secure your business. A security camera or alarm system cannot stop an intruder once he or she has entered your building, they can only record what is happening or alert the authorities. Detection companies require time to alert the authorities which require time to get to your location. Time is precious when faced with a threat and help may come all too late. The only real security in a corporate environment is “protection” security. Protection security is where an actual highly trained human being is physically on-site offering the only real response …immediate action! When an alarm sounds, they’re already on the scene! When a glass breaks, they are there! When a perpetrator enters the building waving around a weapon, the armed security consultant offers defensive resistance in the face of danger, protecting you and your fellow employees from harm. These highly trained security consultants on-site can respond to whatever incidents may occur. When in concert with detection systems, armed security personnel are capable of not only protecting your assets and employees but of preventing incidents before they occur in many cases. This is what we mean by “protection”. Some of our personnel have worked in the alarm industry. This is an advantage to your company. We are in a position to offer you not only the very best in protective services, but also draw on nearly a decade of experience in the detection industry to advise and consult you on the best ways to incorporate both systems into your place of business to offer the most efficient means of protection/detection security possible to suit your needs.
